An unexpected gift!

Yesterday, there was a package in my mailbox, the size of letter, thick with a bump protuding.

Nearly 4 months after my last day at Oracle, I’ve received my 15 Years @ Sun pin and plate (the anniversary date was July 17th). Somehow, receiving this feels weird. First because technically Sun was no more (in France) on July 17th. Then the plate holds the signature of Jonathan Schwartz who was long gone by then. Finally, the date was almost 6 months ago; since I’ve packed and moved on ! But I’m thankful to Oracle for following up and sending them to me, instead of trashing them.

I still haven’t received the gift I ordered before I left, though: a silver made Caran D’Ache ballpen. May be it’s also on its way ! I’d hoped to receive it in time to sign in ForgeRock France new employees’ contract !

Yes, it’s weird, especially considering you’re still there. You should mention it to your manager. He should be able to track that for you 😉
      Take care Anton.

When I got mine, I sent a mail to Scott McNealy saying :

    Hi, Scott!

Well… I’ve got it! I have now received my 15th anniversary plaque. It means a lot to me. I’ve really kicked ass had a lot of fun at Sun. I think I have made things change around me, in our customers, in the way the IT world is today. I joined Sun when we were basically turning on the internet for business in France. What an evolution since then!

But you know what. That plaque… it would really mean a lot more to me if it were signed by you.

Best regards, and thanks for having set the world in motion for a generation,
    Gilles

And within the hour (it was 15:30 CET when he replied) I got :

I would be honored to sign it. See if you and
Iris can figure out how to make that happen.

    Scott

Iris being his admin. She responded :

We have coordinated this type of request before – Scott is happy to do it!!!! And so am I 🙂

If possible, please mail your certificate to us at:

    Sun Microsystems
    10 Network Circle
    MPK10-240
    Menlo Park, CA 94025

Be sure and include a return address and I will FedEx it back to you as soon as I can meet with Scott for a signature. I’ll let you know of course, when I’ve sent it. Please note I typically see Scott in person about 1x per week.

Of course, it will be a bit harder now… but I loved their reaction… and the fact that they did it!

    Cheers,
    Gilles.
