My new OpenDS cap

I meant to post this earlier… but thanks to our new friends, I have a new OpenDS cap.

For the time being, this one requires no extra work nor shift of duty 😉

I could have worn Felix’s cap as well, but I think it suits him better. And anyway, LDAP and OpenDS are good friends…

Come and meet OpenDS in New York…

On Tuesday March 17th, members of the OpenDS project will be participating to the OpenSSO Community Day, an unconference event for the developers, deployers and users of the OpenSSO project. As mentioned on the event wiki, we plan on leading a discussion on using LDAP and OpenDS as the Identity repository. Look at the list of suggested topics and add your own if you have some in mind.

The OpenSSO Community Day is free and only requires you to sign-up. There are only a few seats left, so you’d better hurry. Sign-up here.

CommunityOne East 2009

Then on Wednesday March 18th, I will be at CommunityOne East, a free and open developer conference. If you plan to be there and want to talk about OpenDS or LDAP, drop me a note and we’ll figure out a way to meet there. I will definitely be in the “OpenSSO: Enterprise Security” session, from 11:10am to 12:00pm.

And again if you have not registered for CommunityOne East yet, do it now. The main conference is free, space is limited. Register today. http://developers.sun.com/events/communityone/2009/east/

Merry Christmas to all of you…

Opends Logo Xmas

On behalf of the OpenDS project development team, I wish you a Merry Christmas, and a wonderful, relaxing time with your family and friends.

GlassFish v3 Prelude and LDAP

Glassfish V3Today, Sun announced the immediate availability of GlassFishTM Application Server v3 Prelude and its commercially supported counterpart, Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server v3 Prelude.

The list of benefits and features of GlassFish v3 Prelude is long and impressive.

One thing I did not see on the list but is present and working very well is LDAP support.

In the OpenDS project we document "How to secure web applications deployed in GlassFish with OpenDS". The example is written for GlassFish v2 but continues to work with GlassFish v3 Prelude.

You can also run OpenDS LDAP directory server, embedded in a Web Application deployed in GlassFish

Or deploy OpenDS DSML Gateway in GlassFish

Learn more about GlassFish v3 Prelude in these three videos: Introducing GlassFish v3 Prelude, What’s New in GlassFish v3 Prelude?, and Java EE 6 and GlassFish. Or on The Aquarium UStream.TV channel.

Edit on Nov 7th.

I forgot to mention that there will be a chapter dedicated to OpenDS on the coming book : GlassFish in Action (and it looks like the chapter is already available in the Manning Early Access Program).

Hiatus…

It sounds a lot like a French tradition, but I’ll be on vacation for the next weeks, spending some quality time with wife and kids.

I expect to resume posting here starting August 25th.

Talk to you later 😉

Zinedine Zidane, Matthew… and you ?

Matthew Swift one of the lead developers of the OpenDS project has been spending a lot of time preparing to the Zurich IronMan Triathlon on July 13th. For those who don’t know an IronMan comprises of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike stage, and then a marathon (42km) all to be completed on consecutively on the same day.

This week, he sent our team an email explaining why he was pushing so hard on himself :

"I am doing it as a challenge in order to raise awareness of a terrible incurable illness called Leukodystrophy and to raise money for research into finding a cure.

My 21 month old son, Joseph, was diagnosed with Leukodystrophy late last year. The illness is progressive and degenerative, and, unless a cure is found, means that he will never sit up, walk, or talk. He is left with very little control over his body.

Any money that I raise will be donated to two charities:

* the ELA in mainland Europe for all Euro based donations. Many of

you will recognize the name ELA as being the the charity for which

Zinedine Zidane is patron

* the Myelin Project UK in the United Kingdom for GBP based donations."

Matthew has created a blog called Tri4Joe at http://tri4joe.com. To Matt surprise, his story is starting to spread on the internet and the medias such as the Irish Examiner.

All donations are welcome and can be sent via the blog’s donation page: http://tri4joe.com/donate
And if you choosed to make a donation and happened to be a Sun employee, don’t forget to send Matthew Swift a confirmation email with your employee number and mailstop so that Sun can match the donation.

So join Zinedine Zidane and others to support to Matthew’s cause. Matthew, his wife Colette and their son Joseph will be thankful.

That’s all for now 🙂

Software engineering in Grenoble-Isere

Sun GECThe AEPI (agency for the economic development of Grenoble and Isere) published yesterday a report on software engineering in the Grenoble area, and how it’s boosting Information Technology.

Sun is briefly mentioned:

The area also boasts high-grade private research: Sun Microsystems opened an R&D centre here in 1990;

The whole report is worth reading and illustrates that the reasons for setting up the R&D center (now known as Grenoble Engineering Center) 18 years ago are still valid, and more important than ever.
